2012 MLB All-Star Rosters Announced: Rangers Send Club Record 7 to Game

The 2012 All-Star Game rosters were announced today and the Rangers set a team record by placing 7 players on the roster.  Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre, and Mike Napoli (based on his performance from last season) were voted in as starters at OF, 3B, and Catcher respectively.  Matt Harrison, who leads the American League in wins as a pitcher, closer Joe Nathan, second baseman Ian Kinsler, and shortstop Elvis Andrus will join them as reserves.  The Rangers also have a chance to add one more player to their total.  Fans can vote for the final roster spot among five competing players.  Yu Darvish was chosen as one of those five, and Ranger fans can vote for him to fill that last spot until Thursday, July 5, 3pm CT.

Fans can use their mobile phone to cast votes via the mobile web at MLB.com/vote or via text message. To receive the 2012 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote presented by Firestone mobile ballot, text the word “VOTE” to 89269 (MLB.com).

Hamilton set an all-time record for the most votes received by a player in All-Star balloting with 11, 073, 744 votes, completely destroying the previous record set last year by Jays slugger Jose Bautista, who received 7,454,753 votes.

I am comfortable with all the Ranger players who were selected but Napoli.  He was voted in as a starter even though he’s currently batting .238 and has 27 more strikeouts than hits.  Clearly A.J. Pierzynski deserves an All-Star nod, hitting .285 with 14 homeruns and 45 RBIs.   He also has 50 fewer strikeouts than Napoli  But, my guess is that few people outside Texas realize just how poorly Napoli is playing this season, so his success in the All-Star balloting was largely driven by the stellar numbers he posted last season.  This will be Napoli’s first All-Star invitation and his performance from last season definitely deserves an invitation to the mid-summer classic.  This just brings up the old debate as to whether fans should vote based on current performance or what players have done career wise or in the previous season.

What are your thoughts on the All-Star selections?

I’m happy with the selection, especially Hamilton and Harrison. I think if your all-star game is mid-season then you have to base some of your selection criteria on the previous year.

  2. I agree, it’s just tough on guys who have had great half-seasons but get snubbed because a guy like Napoli (who seriously is one of the worst offensive catchers in the league right now) gets voted in as a starter because of what he did last year. He beat out Joe Mauer for votes who is hitting .304. But like I said, the real snub was Pierzynski who is having a great year all around.
