A friend of mine and I have been mentioning to each other lately that it seems the Rangers just don’t have it in them to sweep a series. I couldn’t remember the last time they swept a team and neither could he. So, I went back and looked. We were right. The Rangers have been simply incapable of sweeping teams this season.
When looking at 3 or 4 game series, the Rangers have been in a position to sweep 30 series this season. That means they either won 2 out of 3, 3 out 4, or actually swept a 3 game series or 4 game series. Of course there have been some series where they did not have this opportunity, like when they lost 3 out of 4 to the Yankees. But in those 30 series where had they just won another game they would have swept, the Rangers actually swept the series only 4 times. The rest, 26 series in all, they couldn’t win that last game.
And what’s worse, they haven’t swept a single series, with some sets against some very bad teams, since they swept San Diego on June 20. So, they have not swept a series since before the All-Star break.
With a 3 game lead over the A’s heading into a mess of games against both the A’s and the Angels, to finish the season, this concerns me. It seems like they just can’t get that last game to put a team away. If they do make the playoffs, it again concerns me that they just don’t have it in them to put a team down. It may not mean anything. Of course you can always lose a game in a playoff series and still win the series. But, nonetheless, their inability to win that deciding game has me worried.
