The Rangers’ two biggest off-season offensive pick-ups are already paying dividends. A week into the season Lance Berkman and A.J. Pierzynski have been excellent at the plate. Berkman is hitting .471 and leading the team in doubles (3). Pierzynski is hitting .389 with a triple and was excellent behind the plate in Yu Darvish’s almost perfect game. As a Ranger fan, it’s hard for me to ask much more from these two new additions. The real surprise for me, though, has been the performance of Nelson Cruz. He’s hitting .500 with 2 doubles and a homerun. He has 10 hits in 20 ABs and almost every one of those hits has been driven. I hope he can keep this up for a good part of the season.
At any rate, it’s very nice to see the new guys playing well. I thought that both would make good additions to the offense. But, I didn’t think they would BE the offense after the first week of the season. However, with the exception of Nellie, that seems to be the case so far.
